Up to 50 files, 200 MB max each.

What MD5 and SHA hash generator does

The hash generator calculates MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 checksums of text (as UTF-8) or of any file without uploading it: files are read in parts in your browser, so large files work too. Paste the hash published by whoever distributes a file to check that your download is complete and has not been altered. The result downloads as checksums.txt in the format sha256sum -c reads.

Limits

  • Up to 50 files at a time, up to 200 MB each.
  • With Pro: files up to 1 GB and up to 500 per batch.
  • A job that takes longer than 10 minutes is stopped so it doesn't freeze your device.
  • Processed in your browser: your files are never uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check that a download is not damaged?

Choose the file, paste the checksum from the official site into “Expected hash” and calculate. You will see whether it matches and with which algorithm; it is recognized by its length.

Which algorithm should I use?

SHA-256 or SHA-512. MD5 and SHA-1 catch download errors, but they are no longer safe against someone deliberately crafting files with the same hash.

Can a hash be used to store passwords?

Not directly: passwords need slow, salted functions such as bcrypt or Argon2. Fast hashes like these are for verifying files and integrity.
