What Password protect a PDF does

Protect PDF adds an open password to your documents: without it, no viewer can show the content. It uses 256-bit AES, the strongest encryption the PDF format supports, and you can choose whether people who open it may print it, copy its text or edit it. Handy for emailing receipts, contracts or medical records with more peace of mind.

Limits

  • Up to 50 files at a time, up to 200 MB each.
  • With Pro: up to 500 files per batch.
  • A job that takes longer than 5 minutes is stopped so it doesn't freeze your device.
  • Processed in your browser: your files are never uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How secure is it?

It uses 256-bit AES (PDF 2.0). Security depends on the password: use a long one with words or varied characters, and share it through a different channel than the email itself.

What if I forget the password?

It can’t be recovered: we don’t store it anywhere. Keep a copy of the original PDF without a password.

Do the print and copy permissions work?

Adobe Acrobat, browsers and most viewers respect them, but some programs ignore them. The open password, on the other hand, is always required.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Encryption happens in your browser with qpdf, and neither the file nor the password leaves your device.
